From the 2 1/2 inch D strips cut rectangles in different width, between 1 1/2" and 2 1/2" (or always the same width if you want the space between the spools equal), but at least not smaller than 1 1/2 inch, and one big space if you want to add the slanted appliqued spools. Now sew the A rectangles to the D rectangles until you have reached a width about 15 -16 inch, having a D fabric on both ends. Press the seam to the spools.

On the spools mark a line 1/4 inch away from the edge. Do it at the bottom and top.
